While moving my Nickels from their folder to 2x2's, I dropped this nickel on the desk. It provided a very nice and familiar sound of silver. I do not have a scale (Yet), it will be delivered on Tuesday. I did check weights, all Jeffersons are supposed to be 5g though.

I have searched the forum and internet for information about this with no luck. My main reason to post this is to ask if anyone has heard of a Nickel on a silver Planchet in the 1990's? I have other 1994 Nickels and they sound very different.

I am not suggesting this is actually silver, but it is strange. I included a photo just to be thorough.

As always, thanks for looking.

That would be a nice one. It's theoretically possible, since they started making the 90% silver proof sets in 1992, and your nickel ante-dates that. In case you didn't have the chart, I've attached the weights coins minted on planchets cut from improper stock. It might be useful when you get your scale.

[edit: I just corrected myself in my head. Silver proof sets were minted in San Francisco, so that makes a wrong stock error less likely. Near impossible? I'm just assuming they only cut the silver blanks in SF, but I don't know this for a fact.]

An alternative explanation is an internal planchet flaw that alters the pitch a dropped coin makes. I don't have any experience with this first hand, but I've seen on CRH forums where people are insistent on weighing possible silver coins instead of the "ring test" for that reason.

Good luck. I'm interested in your update.

Please get back with us when you get the results from your scale.
Books, scale, and a caliper have always been my best investment in coins.

A nickel struck on a planchet of the correct size but 90% silver would weigh about 5.79 grams. Tolerance for a copper nickel planchet would be 5.19 grams. So an accurate weight would go a LONG way to telling if you have anything special. I'm not holding my breath. Wrong side of the country for silver planchets, and the mint had stopped striking foreign coins ten years earlier. Frankly it's just a good demonstration as to why the ring test is not a dependable diagnostic tool.

I will weigh it tomorrow night. The scale has a .01g accuracy and should do the job. I will also pull out my calipers. Thanks for the chart Druu, I snagged it from another post you made a few days ago. I will update you all when I have the info. Thanks.

Here are the measurements:
Weight: 4.98g
Diameter: 0.835" (21.209 mm)
Thickness: 0.075" (1.905 mm)

The coin is non-ferrous and fails the magnet "Silver" test.
The metal detector shows is as Nickel.

I'm at a loss. I do not think it is silver, but it seems like it is the wrong metal.
It actually sounds closer to a clad quarter than silver when compared to other coins. A quarter is .005" thinner.
I am at a loss for now but still investigating.

All the numbers are well within tolerance for a Jefferson nickel. Like Condor101 said, "Frankly it's just a good demonstration as to why the ring test is not a dependable diagnostic tool."

True enough, the sheet this coin was punched from could have been heated or tempered improperly too. Too many other things could have happened to account for this. I'll just chalk it up as strange. Thanks all....
