So, I just found 8 of these coins. I believe they are from Mauritius (wherever that is)but I would like to know more info on them. I know they probably aren't worth anything and sorry if the picture isn't very good quality (1st time taking a picture of a coin)

Depends on who you ask, I guess...the Mauritius tourist board, or the CIA Summary? (a decent distillation of stats, not a political statement, lol)

Some more trivia about these coins. They were designed by George Kruger Gray, noted coin designer back in the 1930's. He designed coinage for Britain and for most of the dominions and colonies of the British empire in 1937, at the beginning of the reign of King George VI. You can see his initials on the above picture, K to the left and G to the right, beneath the shield and above the words "ONE RUPEE".

The design is still used, though inflation has taken it's toll (the Mauritian rupee is worth around US4¢ today). The Mauritian 1 rupee, and the Canadian 1 cent and 5 cents, are the only coins still in circulation anywhere in the world that were designed by Kruger Gray.

Mauritius became independent in 1968 and a republic in 1992. In 1987, the portrait of the Queen on the obverse was replaced with the portrait of the country's first prime minister and father of independence, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Sap, great info as usual! I recognize George Kruger-Gray from his enduring work on Canadian coins.

I think that Sap and I are two birds of the same flock. We both seem to be interested more in the history and background of a coin than the actual coin itself. However, I suspect that Sap has more time to get into these things than I do!!

G'day, Mauritius is famaous in Australian history, for two reasons:
where Matthew FLINDERS (1774~1814) spent more than six years as a prisoner, which destroyed his health, and led to his premature death (1803~1810). FLINDERS was a great navigator, and he is one of only two people, other than a sovereign, to be featured on both an Australian note and an Australian coin. He is credited with coining (forgive the pun) the name "Australia". He had a human side, and he wrote a biography of his cat: "Trim: Being the True Story of a Brave Seafaring Cat". Which leads to the second reason why Mauritius is famous in Australian history ...
Mauritius is where "Trim" disappeared.
Both FLINDERS & Trim are comemorated by statues in Australia & England.

I'm selling some like that on ebay soon - Mauritius always sells well due to it's exotic location, but I don't think they are particularly rare..
