Some more trivia about these coins. They were designed by
George Kruger Gray, noted coin designer back in the 1930's. He designed coinage for Britain and for most of the dominions and colonies of the British empire in 1937, at the beginning of the reign of King George VI. You can see his initials on the above picture, K to the left and G to the right, beneath the shield and above the words "ONE RUPEE".
The design is still used, though inflation has taken it's toll (the Mauritian rupee is worth around US4¢ today). The Mauritian 1 rupee, and the Canadian 1 cent and 5 cents, are the only coins still in circulation anywhere in the world that were designed by Kruger Gray.
Mauritius became independent in 1968 and a republic in 1992. In 1987, the portrait of the Queen on the obverse was replaced with the portrait of the country's first prime minister and father of independence,
Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
