Hi, Mac. It seems like you're asking about two separate things here: missing CENT in FIVE CENTS, and the obverse lettering touching the rim. It looks like the missing CENT lettering is due to a Grease Filled Die. I don't usually do nickels, but the lettering touching the rim looks similar to an issue common with the obverse lettering in 1960s cents. That would be due to Die Deterioration. (Some of the nickel guys on the forum might be able to correct me if I'm wrong about the second part, but I'm near certain about the first part.)

to the Forum. Your pictures need some practice. As near as I can tell it's a Struck Through Grease error. The condition of the coin detracts from much interest though. This is another Greaser, (my avatar).

Yep! Just a Struck Through Grease coin deleting some of the letters. Pretty common. Not much of a premium, maybe get a few dollars on ebay during a good day of bidding!!

Nearly all of the C and T and all of the EN on the die were filled with grease so they didn't strike correctly: "struck-through grease." This is not rare, but not an everyday find either. Considering the abuse it's seen, I would be surprised if it has any worthwhile premium.

The lettering in the motto and date being so close to the rim and even touching/overlapping is common in earlier years. Maybe the obverse die design touch-ups in '87 has something to do with it?
