Hey, this is a repost of sorts of my 1906 Indian Head cent with its picture taken professionally. It has been sent off to NGC. Many people on the forum say this is AU58, and I can see how that assessment might come about. I think some problem spots are the weaknesses on the diamonds, on jewels and on the shield, and hair curl. However, I've seen AU58s and they all seem to have less detail than this coin. Quote: It has been sent off to NGC. Nice looking - guess you better rely on what NGC has to grade that!!

You can see some rub on the high points of the obverse, AU-58
But, NGC may grade it higher, it would be nice if one could have it in hand.

Real nice RB IHC , are the diamonds and curls wear or weak strike ? That is the question .

Good question, T-Bop. The sharpness of the ribbon diamond pattern is affected by strike and/or wear. The diamond in the middle usually gets the most wear from my experience and on this coin that one looks fine. First, let me say this is a beautiful coin and would be a great addition to anyone's collection. I hope you get a higher grade from NGC, but I have to agree with others on this one. I call it AU-58. Quote: An AU-58 coin may appear to be Mint State (MS-63 or higher) but is limited by slight luster breaks on the highest points. To find luster breaks, tilt the coin in the light so that slight differences in the reflection can be seen. Unless I'm mistaken, it looks like I'm seeing light wear on a couple hair curls, one place on the ribbon, a few high points on the feathers, etc. On the reverse there appears to be light wear on high points of leaves and maybe a bit on the knot at the bottom. Quote: MS60
No trace of wear. Significant contact marks or spotting. Color may not be original.
The reason coins will be downgraded to MS60 may be significant contact marks from other coins prior to being placed in circulation. However, there should be no evidence of wear. Looks like a no brainer to me.

I could see where people would give this a technical grade of AU-58 because of the dullish area under "UNITED STATES," but given the overall look of the piece, I think it might get into an MS-61, R&B holder.

Interesting. How long do we have to wait until we find out what happened?

I think you have the dreaded "MS-58", it'll grade AU-58 but has MS luster. For silver coins a lot of AU-58's look better than MS-63's and more importantly cost a lot less.

It'll be probably 3 weeks, if not a bit more because NGC is slow. But it getting an AU58 would probably not be the best thing. I wouldn't mind a grade of au58rb though. It looks like it would be a pop1 in that grade

It looks like it would be a pop1 in that grade "POP 1" for an 1906 Indian cent in AU-58 does not mean anything. That is a super common date that is available in most every Mint State grade up to MS-67 or so. Some circulated grades have very low populations for common coins because getting them certified is not worth the money.

I'll venture 62RB, not a coin I would have spent grading money on.

I would not be surprised at all if this is graded MS. All those highlights that look like rub, we'll see. Is it lighting, strike or is it a slider, I guess it takes magnification to tell. The reverse is really crisp. I'm going with MS63 but I love IHC's so my view is clouded.
