I recently picked up this quarter and need some help figuring out the grade. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to grading. I would say this is in the vg range but don't know if it should be lower because the date is almost all gone (only part of the last "1" is all that remains). Is that acceptable on a raised date slq because the dates on these wore much faster than on the recessed date slqs? One more question....as you can see in the pics, there is some black crud around the rim. is there a safe way to try to remove this or should I just leave it be? Any info is appreciated!

I'd call it g/vg with a partial date.
As far as the carbon spot toning goes I'd leave it alone.
It is what it is!

VG-8 Details . These quarters are known for that black oxidation . Yes leave it alone .

Welcome to CCF. These coins had a raised, exposed date that wore out very quickly. As a result, SLQs minted prior to 1925 are graded based on the condition of the date regardless of the condition of the rest of the coin. This one is between good 4 and 6.

Not worth cost of grading, get VF/EF at minimum 1916 or 17.

Quote: Not worth cost of grading This is a $150 to $200 coin and one of the key dates for the series. If it comes back in a full grade holder from NGC or PCGS, add $50 to that price, and another $50 if CAC likes it. It's absolutely worth the $20-$30 to get it graded.
