From ebay, these two admitted modern counterfeits seem to be identical detail-wise and yet they look very different. What causes the different look - a different production method using the same dies?

What's-The-Difference-Between-These-Two-Fake-Pertinaxes?

But the lettering is ridged (for lack of a better word) on the first specimen and flat on the second.

If you have much experience with coin photography, you will know just how much lighting can do. You can emphasize or reduce details by the way the light is angled.

I agree it's the lighting, also on the second piece it was rubbed with something to fake wear on the high points.

I agree Ron--to me it looks either rubbed or perhaps even squished to flatten out the high points. Of course, normal wear and tear does that too...
