Does anyone know why the reverse side is rotated 180° on US coins?

So when you flip it, it's not upside down. The reason is the same for Canadian coins too, they just flip it a different way. Edit: Oh, I see what you mean. I have no idea why the two countries do it differently.

I don't know of any official reason, but it may have simply been to be different from the British. Their coins were struck with Medal orientation.

Why is the Flip Side 'Flipped'?

Why is the picture on the back of a coin upside down compared to the front?

All U.S. coinage is produced in this way, commonly called a "coin turn." Mint research has not determined the exact reason for this tradition. It is not required by law.

The alternative is called a "medal turn." In that case, the back and front have the same orientation because medals are traditionally made to hang from a ribbon at the top.

I believe I've read an article in the past concerning some specific or special (not intended for general circulation) US coinage has been produced with a medal orientation, but believe you can list them on one hand. Thanks, Doug.
