I have the top 100 book, and so am fairly sure the VAMs in it are fairly stable, but what about the hot 50? I have a couple Morgans I am sure are hot 50, but how often do they change? If once a hot 50, always a hot 50 I will hold on to them, but if they get moved on and off the list, I may try to sell while they are listed if they are going for a higher price than they will have when they come off the hot 50 list.

once a Hot50 always a Hot 50 as far as I understand it, just like the TOP 100 they don't change

Well then, what exactly makes them Hot? or Top? Just someone decided one day while looking at VAM-X that it was hot or what?

I do not know this as a fact so don't quote me, but I was under the impression that the Hot 50 could change if another variety became more sought after and bumped one off the list. I think they have a link that explains it on VAMworld. I'll check it out and post what I find.

Precisely. You can pretty much consider all of this to be the brain child of Jeff Oxman, a man who should be seen by history as one of the all-time great silver dollar experts and collectors. He and Dr. Michael Fey created the Top 100, and the Hot 50 is his alone. He's also co-author of the Peace dollar Hot 50 (With Dr. David Close, "Mr. Peace dollar" to my mind). He's also the guy behind the 1878 8TF and 7/8TF Attribution Guides.

There will be other lists (there are other lists), but it'll be up to Jeff Oxman if the Top 100 and Hot 50 ever change.

Thanks SuperDave,

I was curious about this one as well. As always, I have more research to do in this area.
