Hey there, I bought two half eagle from my local coin Dealer. The price of the 1905 coin was 310 Euro/327 Dollars and the 1912 price was 360 Euro/380 Dollar. They are my first american coins and so I don't know much about rating their condition. How would you grade them? Greeting from Germany! Alex Edited by Alexthegreat 02/23/2017 4:21 pm

I agree the 1905-S is a low-end mint state piece, probably MS-61. This is a slightly better date and you got a good deal. Very hard to grade Indian half eagles from photos. I don't see any wear on your coin so it might also make low mint state. If it falls short it isn't by much. In that case it should be solid for AU-58. Either way the price was also good. Nice pair of coins overall!

I'll say MS61 and AU58. In the German grading scale, vzst. and bf. to CCF / Herzlich Willkommen im unserem CCF-Forum!

The 1912 is a 1912 S which is a scarcer date, this date is known for a weak mintmark. Zoom in and you'll see it. Greysheet in au58 for the 12S is $700-$800. If it's real you got a great deal

Not so sure about that S mintmark on the Indian. The mintmark for Indian half eagles is much larger than the small shape I see on the OP's coin. It does look S-shaped but unless there is a known "micro-S" variety of the 1912-S I think this has to be a Philly coin. Here is a shot of the mintmark area of my 1910-S half eagle. This is a very weak S coin. Note the size and position of the S. Here is my 1909-S which has a strong mintmark. Again, note size and position.

Thank you for the help and the nice welcome! The idea with the hidden S is interesting, but in reality I can't identify it. Maybe its not there or maybe I am blind. Probably thats somethink for an expert. What would be a regular price for a normal Version in au 55 or 58? Anyway, I bought the coins because of I find them very pretty. Especially the Indian Head. I would have thought that its condition is much better than the Lady Liberty. Maybe thats because of we don't work with the Sheldon System in Europe. Is a 58 coin with almost no Luster cheaper that a 60 coin with luster and a lot of scratches? I know thats offtopic and you are no experts for german coins, but what would you give to this one? It has lots of scatches, but a very intense luster. Greetings Alex
