Looks on surface from pix...would say glue or sticky kiddie fingers!

The reverse looks a bit flatten on the left cornice area.

I noticed the little bright spots on the reverse, but doesn't seem flattened. Also, its not glue, if you run your fingernail over it you can feel its indented not on top. I won't be bummed, I'm not in it for profit, just looking for my first cool find. My first thought was dremel but thats pretty fine work to not damge the rim. I'll try for a couple better pics.

If it were a striking error, the letters of LIBERTY would not be displaced like they are.
The metal appears to be pushed like one would expect to see with damage.

Any number of things could have caused that -- maybe it got dragged around a parking lot during an acid rain.

I think the damage is too irregular to ever figure out what happened.
