So, I took a gamble on a coin lot on the Bay, but not for this coin (thank goodness). I actually received 4 other '40s cents with the same look and varying stages of circulation wear. Opening the package, I knew this wasn't right instantly. This is the best example. All five a very shiny but show moderate wear and an unusual texture. Thoughts?

Looks like an electroplate job that was left in too long. Coins weren't in best of shape prior to the bath. Did you know these were plated when you purchased them? Really not a good job on copper plating...

Now here's a good job! Yours may even be painted with a metal laquer.

No, I didn't know. The pics were bad enough that all I could see was shine, not even most dates other than knowing they were Wheaties.

I got the lot for a couple of Steelies that actually look original but will be posting them as well. All the examples I have are pretty rough and wanted some nice ones for variety.

I got a good surprise in the lot: a 1969-s proof LMC that I couldn't even make out in the pics.

I would say bad plate job. They do end up in circulation sometimes as well. I got a friend into CRHing, and he found a mid forties wheat where the plate had been worn off in some areas.
