All,

Hey there..

I have returned to coin collecting after a LONG break, and loving it again..

To get "back into the groove", I am just completing a State Quarters P/D Dansco album (sticking with "uncirculated" quarters from mint cello wrappers), and then have a separate State Quarters "proof album" where I have the proofs in their original 5-coin proof holders (I am using the Eagle Coin Holder Proof Set Album).

I just like the idea of keeping "proofs" in their original proof holders instead of breaking them out and putting into an album..

Anyway, I am almost done with my State Quarters album and was thinking of starting a Roosevelt dime album..

I was thinking of doing a Dansco P/D album again, focusing on high-quality MS type coins.

Looking at the prices in the Red Book and prices on ebay, it looks like this is an album I can probably tackle in a year or so at my allotted "allowance" I am giving myself toward coin collecting.

In the 1965 to today date range, they all look pretty cheap (about $10 for a 10 year set of of P/Ds), except the 1982 and 1983 seem to be more expensive for some reason.

And for the 1946 to 1965 "silver" range, it looks like most that are MS63/65 can be had in the $10 to $20 "per coin" range, with the exception of some "key dates" that appear to be 1949, 1949S, 1950S, 1951S.. and more in the $30 to $50 range for those...

Does this sound about right?

And is there anything I need to be on the "lookout for" in purchasing these?

Are there any issues with "fakes" in Roosevelt dimes?

Anything challenges in putting together a Roosevelt dime album...

Thanks!

Michael

Look out for lightly worn '82 and '83 issues. Many of the coins sold as Uncs have a little wear. If you want nicely made BU's you'll find these very difficult and much more expensive than the guides list.

I really loathe the mints decision to not issue mint sets in '82 and '83. Though I think some sets were privately issued. Anyways I don't like the fact the continuity was broken.

Your prices sound about right.

For me, before I purchase a coin, for a set like your talking.
Once I find one I like, check around .. ebay and local coin shops.
Just to see if you can find one cheaper before buying the better
priced coins.

Also consider picking up a set from a local coin shop or coin show.
Sometimes you can get a good price on a complete set. Then you
Can upgrade coins ... to make it kore "your set"

For example .. one like your talking is sitting in one of my LCS's right now.
I am thinking many shops have similar.

Back when the decision not to make mint sets was announced in 1982 I had mixed emotions about it. On the one hand I knew I'd make some good money setting aside these coins for the future but on the other I knew spectacular Gems wouldn't exist at all because almost all spectacular Gems go into mint sets and the few that went into circulation would be chewed up and worn out.

Over the years though I dislike this decision more and more. I wasn't able to find all these coins in quantity and in choice condition. I just never saved any BU rolls unless they were very choice so I have none of many of these two dates. I had to scrounge around searching the private mint sets and whatever was around just like everyone else.

And this is the problem in a nutshell: I don't even have a nice Gem of each of these coins in my collections. Some might not even exist in true Gem. You see the high grades awarded by the services but these coins will almost invariably be poorly struck from worn dies. They're clean but they are in no way true Gems.

It has left a hole in these series and will result in Gem sets being far more expensive.

Not a lot key dates in this set, maybe a few what I would call semi-key dates. Of course, 1964 and older are 90% silver.

I have a Dansco completed with circulated coins, but I also have a few "special" Roosies to round out my collection, like a 1964 DDR FS-801, a 1982 no P, and a 1996-W (West Point Mint).

You mentioned getting a Dansco P/D album. There were a lot of business strike S mint coins in this series. But, I know what you meant, the album without proofs.

back to coin collecting!

I have not heard of any fakes in the series.
And yes as batboy mentioned I would pick up the 1996W for your collection.

Thanks all for the advice..

Maybe I will get an extra/blank "dime" page I can put at the back of my Dansco album for a few of these 'extra coins' that you mentioned (the 1996W, etc...). Probably an easy way to add them in..

Thanks.

There is one more thing you might want to do. A lot of the post '64 issues in mint sets are very poor specimens, tarnished, or both. You might consider hand selecting choice specimens for most of these dates and especially the '68 to '80. It will cost more but it should be worth it. They're very inexpensive anyway so the increased cost is nominal.
