I have been looking to add a high grade Type 1 Standing Liberty quarter to my collection. Can anyone share any explanation (and examples!) on how MINT STATE coins differ between a full head (FH), and a non-FH? The price guide differences between these grades are almost double. Since I have been looking, I have yet to see a high grade slab (MS 63-65) in person that is not an FH and priced as such! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

That's a HUGE help. Maybe the easiest way to see the differences is on the resolution of the beads, and especially the line, above Liberty's head.

. Excellent question. It has to do with the firmness of the strike and the head is where it's the easiest to see a strong strike.

If you think the Ty I's have a gap, have a look at some of the Ty II issues, like the 26-D. Smush head is the norm and will go for $350 in MS-65. MS-65 FH is $25,000, if you can fine one.

I've read that 80% of the 1917 Type I Standing Liberty quarters have full heads. It seems like the number is higher than that from what I've seen. Here is one in MS-65. Here is one of the later pieces with a full head close-up. Full Head From what I've read, the ear hole is a big deal on these pieces.

Personally, I would always go for the Full Head coin; I think the premium is worth it.

FH or not FH I would just like to have a full set in AU58 and EF in 1916 and AU in 27-S. Just to get a set like that would cost over over 15K. The best deal is the 27-S in AU58. This is a pretty rare coin in AU and yet has strong dates even in fine condition. I have 23-S in EF and the date is not as strong as a 27-S in Fine. Pre-25 and post 25 are different coins. To go after FH for the scarce SLQ's is really going to make the coins out of reach for all but well healed collector/investor types IMOL.

The full head is how the artist intended it to be, i'd always buy a FH example if I had the Money.
