Wow--big congrats and excellent deal! That one looks nice. So...in the past couple weeks, we know first-hand of three '99 CAMs being found. That's pretty amazing, considering that just 3500 are estimated to exist.

I'm very happy that my first attempt bore fruit! I still have a 1998 set on the way so, again, I'm keeping my expectations low. Oh, and no DDO quarter in the set - that would have deserved its own topic! I think Coinlover is keeping quiet until he has something in hand...

I may have found another '99 CAM but I'll keep it under wraps for now.

If we really are finding this many, it makes the 3,500 official figure seem suspect. Maybe a second [or more] die pairing? I believe three million proof sets were minted in that year -- what are the odds that so many CAMs end up on ebay?

Either there's more than one '99 CAM die, or maybe people are still selling off sets that were never checked. In any case, I probably would think twice about shelling out $9-10K for a PR70 example.

The one I purchased: 122096118123I also have another '98 I'm looking at but am undecided. It's a little annoying that with the '99 set w/ quarters, sellers think most people are interested most in the quarters. Good luck spotting a DDO with these pics - a CAM cent is hard enough! Edit: with the numbers mentioned, the CAMs would make up about 0.12% of all proofs and of the CAMs (saying that each of us found just one recently), we've discovered 0.09% of them. Who knows what would happen if sellers actually posted pics of the reverse most of the time and they weren't being sold in huge lots with other years...

I must have missed that listing--the "FG" really stands out as diagnostic of a CAM reverse. I suspect the 98 and 99-S CAM cents left in proof sets haven't been spotted with the same frequency as those broken out for sale.

Whoa, that's an old listing. "Last updated on Oct 25, 2016 07:13:55 PDT." I didn't get that far back. I think I prefer the provided picture to your zoomed in crop!
I feel like I'm getting tricked with the FG gap appearing larger than it is due to lighting angle. I see some huge gaps, but also a clear space in the AM. Coingirl's listing looked good good at the FG, but the other signs aren't there.

Yeah--it's easy for my eyes to get tricked by these lousy pictures. Yeah, on the Coingirl one, the FG does look like it, but when I look at other markers I'm not so sure.

I looked at coingirl's listing tonight with the added pics. Even with the extra pics I'm undecided because of the angles. I decided to pass because of that oval formation on it whatever that is. If the one I got is an old listing, it must have gone unsold many times. Certainly a shame for everyone overlooking it! Has anyone considered submitting these? I would prefer PCGS or NGC but I'm not a member. I know mine wouldn't make PF70 but graded examples sell for multiples over raw. I also found a 1998 proof CAM in the original packaging set that sold for $400+ (can't find it again now). I know the '98s are more scarce but would it be better to keep it original or break it out for grading?

Quote: I decided to pass because of that oval formation on it whatever that is. I spent some time looking at that one and suspect it's the beginning of corrosion. With photos like these, at some level you go on gut instinct--and it's worked! I already have a 98-S CAM with a spot, so I'll pass on that one.

I decided to spring on the other '98 set I was watching. So, I have two 1998 proof sets coming and my toes are crossed. Even if they both flop, I'll keep the best and resell the other. Plus, the '99 CAM more than makes up for one dud (or two). *Maybe this should be changed to "The Perpetual CAM vs WAM Thread." Anyone else want to join the hunt?

I'm not ready to pull the trigger on coingirl's 1999 set either. I've been through the 1998s and didn't see anything I liked. Are you guys going through silver sets too, or just clad? I don't know if they're in the silver sets, but that definitely affects budget.

I check both silver and clad sets. I read they're found in both...I would definitely spend the $$ if a silver set had a CAM.
