Thinking off at a tangent:
Humans in the Americas certainly knew how to use gold and copper.
Did they ever learn how to smelt iron and learn how to use it?

Doesn't seem to be any evidence of iron smelting or use in the pre-Columbian Americas.

Copper and gold were smelted, refined, and cast in South America, this technology migrated north to Central America, and then to the Aztecs, but there is no evidence of smelting and casting of copper or gold in the remainder of the North American continent.

You have not been watching "The Curse of Oak Island". That is the most absurd show ever on the History Channel. According to them the Holy Grail and the Templar treasure is right here in the USA. There is a great series of books that are historical fiction by Bernard Cornwall about the time period in Britain when these gold items were buried. Both the Danes and Brits wore gold rings on their arms to show status and wealth. After battles the bodies of the dead were looted and striped of anything valuable. I can see those Vikings burying their gold as they made hasty retreat or the Brits doing the same with intentions of coming back later to dig it up. For around 800AD to 1100 AD the Danes (Vikings) controlled most of England. They made a practice out of looking churches of gold and anything of value. It probably got sent back to Scandinavia but some must have been kept in England in the Danegeld.
