Toning vs sintering. I assume this dime is environmentally toned, but it is just such a nice uniform color that it reminded me that I have never figured out how to tell an honest improperly annealed coin from standard toning. Is there something in particular to look for?

Could have been a sharpie. Here is what one looks like 10 minutes after treatment. Give it some time to tone down and might look about the same. But still interested in how to figure out if a coin is improperly annealed.

The primary diagnostic for an improperly annealed coin is the presence of luster. A genuine example will have it while environmental damage will impair the luster. Obviously, things get murky once a coin is worn so a dark circulated coin with no luster may have been improperly annealed but there is no way to know for certain without the presence of luster so any such coin has to be discounted.

That is good to know. And by luster I assume you mean mint luster of the sort that shows the cartwheel effect and not just a smooth, shiny surface. Would I also be correct to think that a coin with a splotchy look to the color would not be an annealing problem?

If you carried for your pocket a while it will look antiqued when the silver color comes back to the higher devices and the fields will stay blackened. Take images of it from time to time to show the progress. I would like to have several along the way.

The image may not show up quickly. Something is going on with my image host today.
