Hundreds of years ago a Dutch Ship sank just off the coast of where I live. Some divers came here and looked around, they gave a few houses some coins that they found.

I'm hoping to become an Archaeologist and I have a deep interest in history. Today my great Aunt gave me the coin that she received from the divers. She said I was the only one she could think of that would appreciate it.

I would love to know more about it. Can anyone help me? I'm uncertain if it's gold or silver; she seemed to think that it's gold. Is it worth anything? - (I'm not planning to sell it, I'm just curious).

Here are some pictures....

It appears to be a silver Ducaton from Belgium, but I'm hardly an expert here.

I believe this is a ducaton from the province of Utrecht in The Netherlands, KM 83.1.

If I am correct, this is also called a "Silver Rider," contains an ounce of silver, and is about 94% pure. These Dutch coins played a big part in Colonial American commerce in the late 1600s and early 1700s, before Britain established firm control over the area.

Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!

(As far as value, it is in pretty good shape, but does show the signs of being in salt water. My catalog is kinda old, but I'd say this is worth at least $100. Hopefully someone with more current info and more knowledgeable will jump in with more details.)

What you have appears to be a Ducaton which contains about an ounce of silver. If real it could be worth a few hundred dollars. If you could prove what ship it came from it could be worth more. Where do you live? Seems like a tempting place to take a swim.

I also find the circumstances around getting this coin interesting. Any idea why the divers were just giving away these coins?

Thanks everyone.

Snowman - I live on a remote Island off of Scotland, we have had several shipwrecks around here actually. This coin acctually comes off a pretty well known wreck called De Liefde - http://www.vocshipwrecks.nl/out_voy.../liefde.html

The divers gave the coins to the locals because they feared that they would sell the story to the press. I believe they used the coins as blackmail. When they dived they found a hored of coins in a wooden chest.

As a Dutchie at this forum I welcome you. Concordia Res Parvae Crescvntin Latin means Union fait la force in French and Eendracht maakt macht in Dutch.

It was the motto off William IV of Holland who reigned in between the years 1711-1745. His father William III became King of England.

These coins were used for trade in the Baltic area as well as in the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean, Asia and offcourse, to pay the Norwegians for the rental of the village of Smeerenburg, situated at an island which now is known as Spitzberg.

It was only used for trade outside Dutch boundaries, and inside it was transported between banks, apart from the gold ducatons.

The time this coin was struck, we were at war with England. Actually, we did have 4 wars with your people. It started during the Spanish occupation of the Low Countries, and ended after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte on the plains of Waterloo in 1815.

The scutcheon as showed under the helmeted knight is of the City of Campensis (kampen), laying in the province of Gelria (Gelderland).

Very nice specimen of a Dutch ducatoon ("silver rider" in the American colonies). The date is common because of large numbers of newly-minted coins were found in a shipwreck of 1711. Your coin would likely bring $175 - $200 USD in an ebay auction.
