What do you guys think? What would it grade and what do you think the value is? I'll let you know what I paid for it after I get some feedback.

Sweet pick-up! I have always had a weak-spot for any English hammered coin. And after my week-long internship at Spink London last year, it has kept growing. About ¾ of my medieval collection consists of hammered pennies and (half)-groats, especially those from Henry VI & Edward IV. I'm trying to collect all of the different series issued by the former, but this might be a little off-topic.

That being said, yours is obviously a little earlier, a Groat, issued by Edward the Third. I am definitely not an expert on the different issues of this ruler, but looking at this coin, I feel relatively sure that it belongs to his fourth coinage the only coinage in which groats were issued;)). I do see a part of the French title on the coin, which proves it isn't from the so-called "treaty period". Furthermore, I see an almost 'solid' (not quite sure how to explain this) cross as a mintmark, which was only in use from 1351 to 1352 if my sources are correct. It is definitely pre-treaty in that case. The Lombardic M, but more importantly the wedge-shaped R lead me to conclude it is a Groat from Series C, unfortunately one of the less-rare types, but nevertheless one heck of a neat coin! If someone with more experience in Edward III's coinage wants to correct me, go ahead, Series C is just my best guess.

I must admit I am not the greatest when it comes to determining the grade coins are in. But if I had to guess, I would say around 'Fine' or a little below that. My (outdated) Catalogue gives 45 pound for a Fine coin, 175 for a very fine coin. I'm guessing you should have paid around $30? Could be wrong though.

You nailed it, AnYangMan, a groat of Edward III. Your attribution is correct. London mint. North # is 1257, SE-1617 for Seaby. I would grade it Fine with some flan loss and a slightly weak bust. Yours MAY be a slightly scarcer variety with pellets between the letters TAS in CIVITAS, if I am seeing the photo correctly, and I would value it around £30-£40 at the upper end.

In the event you should ever come across one of these in the wild with the retrograde / Lombardic N's in "LONDON" and a bar above the last N...that would be quite a nice find ;)

Wow thanks for all the information. I appreciate it. I paid 28 dollars for it. Think that's a fair price?
