Hi all: newbie here making a few first purchases on ebay, and the more I read forums and collector sites, the more paranoid I'm getting about fakes! Have this shilling, and please note the 'scratches' under Georgivs on obverse. Size is 25mm and weight 5.9g.
Is is a forgery? What would cause those marks?
Thanks all!!

looks real to me but I am no expert. they look like fingerprints, not scratches.

Looks authentic to me, and like the dollar man said, those look like fingerprints that were on the toning that's been cleaned off. Looks like an old cleaning but it definitely looks like it's been cleaned to me.

Fingerprints! Never thought of that. I'm surprised that fingerprints would leave such a mark.
Thanks everyone.

Georges eye has gone...can't fake that.Although this 1/- is more common than Katie Price.

Funny!
Amazing what they can sell for on ebay, though.

In my new book I illustrate in color a few counterfeits of the period and their base metal alloys of this type. This type does come up occasionally as a counterfeit made during this period but not as a Modern Chinese forgery. THe key is the weight as compared to Krause as most are in tin with some lead to bring up their weight.

The book should be out around May/June 2017 via Amazon Books.

The pics are not clear enough to say exactly what those marks are... though I'm not seeing that as fingerprint remains.

The piece IS genuine, though, no question. Note that the 1758 6d is a fairly common issue.
