I purchased this coin yesterday evening at our local coin club meeting along with a number of other fifty cent pieces. This one stood out. I don't think this is PMD, but I would appreciate comments/opinions regarding this coin.

are you sure it is metal? drop it in some pure acetone, and see if it comes off

Looks like it was damaged on purpose.

I agree with oldmike, try some acetone, looks like glue or lacquer or such.

DBM and oldmike, Thank you for your replies.I am pretty sure this is metal and not glue. I don't normally clean coins and have never used acetone. Where can I purchase it, at a drugstore? Aside from the extra (metal),there are a couple of shiny reflective surfaces in the centre of the shield. It almost appears to be chrome. I know some of the dies used to be chrome plated. Is it possible that the chrome has let go from the die and adhered to the coin?

Particularly the lion on the left, I noticed it's almost 75% obliterated. The dark heavy spotting, just curious, is the inner surface area raised or sunken? If you choose to go the Acetone route, Cdn Tire or even Walmart usually carry it in the paint dept with the other chemicals such as mineral spirits. But if it's glue or lacquer, I think you'd likely notice a yellowish discolouration.

Thank you for the reply WildflowerAB. The dark heavy spotted areas are sunken, and they are somewhat suspicious of PMD to me, almost as if some type of electrical arcing occurred. However the other areas where the extra (metal) is present appear legit, as if they have been present since the coin was struck. On a side note, I suspect you live in Alberta, WildflowerAB. I do as well and am thinking about going the Edmonton show this weekend or the Calgary show in a couple of weeks. Do you know any error experts that I might be able to show this coin to?

I can't see how that could have happened during the strike, but I have been wrong before. Acetone will not harm your coin. Some epoxy is crystal clear. My very first post on this site was a quarter that I thought had extra metal. The folks on here said it was some form of glue, I even argued the point, but then I got some better magnification and some acetone, and then had to eat humble pie. These folks are seldom wrong, anyway "good luck"

Yes I do live in Alberta. In the past I've found the Edmonton coin show to be quite a bit larger than Calgary's but either one, I'm sure if you were to ask one of their members, they'd be pleased to direct you to a knowledgable expert. Great idea!
