Yesterday I started sorting out a box of Jefferson nickels I obtained from my bank when I came across what looks like a lincoln sent had been stamped over the rear of the nickel. Any opinions would be appreciated. I have recently got back into this from when I was a kid. I had some good luck with half dollar hunting recently and found several silver Kennedey's and 3 Ben Franklins.

Post mint damage commonly referred to as PMD here on the forum.

Cent was placed on the nickel and slammed with a hammer. The reverse image of the cent was then transferred to the nickel.

Sorry about the coin, but you still win a BIG WELCOME TO THE CCF!

There is a good chance a cent was stuck to the reverse of this nickel in some type of glue. The green corrosion seems to indicate this.
Rest in Peace

If this is glue the image of the cent would be layered on top of the nickel

Looks like cent was stuck in som glue on the back of the nickeland then pulled away. Try soaking in some water or acetone and see if the "error" doesn't go away.

So guys I took the advice and just let the nickel soak in acetone. It wound up being some type of cement or glue. It came off and cleaned up. Thank you for all your help. It would have been a pretty cool piece.

I agree that is looks like the cent was adhered to the nickel leaving an impression behind once it was removed.
