Hi, I'm new to CCF. I got a question. I've lived in Canada all my life, and have found every denomination of coin (1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, $1, $2) in pocket change. But I've never found a 50¢. The RCM offers them in their uncirculated sets, and Coinsandcanada.com talks about them existing.

Are there regular 50¢ coins in circulation, or are they a special coin only found in uncirculated sets? Thanks!

I don't know about in Canada, but here in the US, 50 cent coins are still legal currency. They can be circulated, but currently they aren't used that often in circulation. I just spent some this morning, but those will probably go into someone's collection rather than deposited in the bank. Modern 50 cent coins are in mint/proof sets or you can buy bags/rolls of them from the mint.

The last 50 cent to be circulated was in 2002 I believe. If you want them you will have to go around the banks and ask if they have any turned in.
Now when I get a bunch of extras I spend them or give them as tips around town.

The 50 cent coins no longer circulate in Canada. If you are collecting you will have to buy them. The mint sells new 50 cent rolls each year.

You can also ask tellers at bank branches if they have any coins or rolls. It will be hit and miss (sometimes you get lucky).

Happy hunting!

This interesting topic has come up in the past and it appears the answer might vary dependant on different parts of the country. In Alberta I recall that as far back as the '70s it became unusual to see a 50c circulation. Banks usually had some but mainly provided them to customers who specifically asked.

The published mintage of 50c also tells the story. Up until 1985 it was typically 1 to 3 million per year, then dropped off to less than a million except for the final year, 2002P.

Compare that to 25c, most often mintage exceeded a 100 million per year throughout that same time.
