Stopped by a coin shop today and asked about coins in their melt bin. Didn't have as much time as I wanted but managed to grab these four - not perfect but nice no the less. One or two may be better than what I have in my humble collection so I'll evaluate and swap them out.
I can only imagine how many of these have been melted over the years - kinda sad .

There may be a couple of die cracks on the Reverse of the 1940, cannot telll for sure though. I just wonder what the populations are now after all the silver melts.

Still huge amounts exist. Most halves and Dollars were sold as silver bullion and not melted. Especially perceived older rarer dates.
First coin shop I worked at in the 80s sold them by the thousand dollar face bag full.
George VI CIRCULATED halves are very very common still and bring little over silver value , save 1947 ML and 1948.
EVEN UNC coins are a tough sell to Canadian Collectors.

the melted cons have to be in the numbers higher than anyone can imagine,,i have seen personally 20 gallon buckets sent to the mint to be melted..and for a fact I know of a deal that sent 10,000-dollars in face value brokered to the mint for melt.... the person I deal with guess-to mates.. that he has sent over a quarter million dollars in face to melt, and this is just one source..

Good save ...

I love Canadian half dollars. I try to pull a few out of the melt bucket
every week or two.

Hey Aghawk, that is my passion too. Pulling 50's from the melt bin. I have noticed that 15 years ago you would find the odd Queen Victoria, then you stopped seeing them, ten years ago you would still see a lot of Edwards, then they started to vanish. Recently I have noticed it is harder to find KGV's in the melt bin. Not sure if that means the populations are dropping or that even melt bucket rejects pre 1937 are now getting collectible. In any case, it makes the hunt less fun than it used to be.
