every day I look at ebay, type in US coins.
have noticed that there are a lot of toned coins.
also there are a lot of fake toned coins, what I call them.
but have noticed that there seam to be more toned nickles than all the other coins together.
is there something in the make up of nickles that the other coins do not have?
personally I do not care for toned but just asking.
I like proof coins the best.

I see a lot of proof/mint nickels that have acquired a slight blue tint. Perhaps due
to the metals used?

Most of the other coins in the proof/mint sets retain their lustrous beauty that many
collectors prefer. But, to each their own. Some rainbow Morgans have a certain appeal ...

I just want to barf at all the artificially toned coins I see listed but some naturally toned coins I have seen are rather attractive. I do like some of the album toned coins where the toning runs around the rim and some rainbow Morgan toning.

I have a set of Jefferson nickels that has nice original toning.
They are housed in a book type holder.
I do think they are more prone to toning than the silver or copper coins.

Same here ,a few of my album Nickels have toned also, but I do not care for artificially toned coins of any kind ! they are too obvious and to me non-attractive!

What? No love for artificially toned coins? Normally I would agree with you... but, I do have one that is pretty cool.

batboy that is a cool looking coin but it scares me thinking it could be faked. I guess I'm not up on toning or how coins become toned . I do no that a lot are man made toned.
Today I went through all the toned nickels and there are around 1800. with pricing from .99 to $999.00
What would scare me is the gold around the lady, its nice just don't look real

Clearly it's man-made, but it is really cool looking!

Toning is really no more than a beautiful even progression of surface corrosion.

Rainbow toning is very chemically delicate unstable stage as a coin tones from blast white to a rich flat grey patina.

It might be worth experimenting with beautiful artificial rainbow toning, by spraying a coin with inert clear acrylic lacquer. That way, a protective layer is in direct surface contact to stop further corrosion in it's tracks.
Such a coin would have to be encapsulated to protect the very thin protective preservative layer on the surface of the coin, otherwise ugly uneven toning of unprotected parts on the surface would start again in those areas.

There's no doubt the one I posted is artificial toning, it even says so on the slab. Still a fun and unique coin.

I agree, its nice...
Also I think PCGS secure slabs should preserve toning rather well
