 I can understand the OP's position. You spend $250 hard earned dollars on a bag full of ugly worn coins and have buyers regret. Like others said the silver value is there, but not pleasant to look at! Always try, anyway, to get your "junk" silver in the best condition possible. If you need to cash it in. numismatic value will always beat melt value.

I got these all at melt, excluding the silver dollars, paid a little over on those. This was from several years back when I used to buy lots of stuff off the street(legal).

There's a distinguishing ring sound about silver, that's why I can understand why people hoard them.
Back to the OP. Yes. I wouldn't buy that lot for the money.

Many look like they were in a fire but silver is silver.

I showed the coins to a few local coin guys in my area and the highest offer was $230, I sold and learned my lesson. It cost me $20 but most of these "coins" were behind culls, one of them said they were in the process of being melted. I only had 175 dimes instead of 182, but I was able to bend some of them because they were paper thin.
I am just starting out collecting, not experienced...

@silversled,
I have done worst when I started, and sometime still do the stupid things.

Two things matter with junk silver - (1) The weight of the lot and (2) The coins need to be identifiable to ensure no off-metal counterfeits. So long as both check out, and you paid near or less than melt, you got a good deal.

So, where do you guys buy silver at or below melt prices? The only place I know of is ebay and it is usually above melt even after I minus out the shipping and paypal/eBay fees. When looking online, I just find the expensive stuff and certificates... Thanks!

@mnknight77 search around, a pawn shop near me recently some me 90% silver at 10x per face value and 11x per face value. I kept some and flipped the rest to a friend for 12x. Got back all my money and gained some extra silver.

Wow! Sounds like $230 was a pretty good offer actually. $20 is nothing! Try losing $400 on 3 large cents within 4 months...not fun! You ended up ok!
