Over the past year and a half or so, I've grown distant from the forum and numismatics entirely. However, before I drifted away, I set a big personal goal for myself: to complete the entire set of Morgan silver dollars. Naturally, that's a huge goal with a ton of purchases involved. I think, though, with enough time, patience, and determination, I can get the job done. I'm excited to embark.

I plan on having all of the coins graded and in slabs by PCGS. Of course, if I see a raw coin or a slabbed coin I really like, I'll crack it and send it to be graded. You can knock me for only wanting a PCGS set, but I'm a little obsessive compulsive in how I collect things, so having them all in the same slab will be very nice. It's just how I like to collect.

Thus far, I've only had 5 Morgans. That leaves 91 others. Eesh.

The 5 that I've had include:

-1878-S in MS65
-1878 in MS63
-1880-S in MS64PL
-1884-O in MS64+
-1904-O in MS63

All of these coins are very common dates in very common and (relatively) inexpensive grades. Before this set is finished, I'm sure I'll upgrade a few of them, since the 1880-S and 1884-O's are so readily available in higher grades. Anyway, today I made huge progress and doubled the size of the collection with a purchase of 5 more coins. This was, by far, the biggest purchase of my life. This is what I purchased today:

1878-CC PCGS MS64

1887 PCGS MS65 (I think this one deserves higher than 65 to be honest)

1897-O PCGS FR02 (I've always loved really worn Morgans. Can't imagine how many and who's pocket's this baby's been in!
My-Quest-To-Complete-The-Morgan-Dollar-Set

1885-O PCGS MS65 CAC
My-Quest-To-Complete-The-Morgan-Dollar-Set
My-Quest-To-Complete-The-Morgan-Dollar-Set

1899-O PCGS MS66 CAC (Suuuuuper clean and shiny!)
My-Quest-To-Complete-The-Morgan-Dollar-Set

So yes. I'm at 10 of 96 Morgans. There's a long road ahead and I'm prepared to walk it. I'll probably keep a log and photos of the Morgans as I purchase them here so you all can see my progress.

Don't let your "compulsive obsession" with consistency get down to the color and style of the labels in the PCGS holders. I've known collectors who got that bad. It's like watching a dog chase its tail.

As for putting together a Morgan dollar set, it's actually not that hard. All it takes is money, and lots of it if everything has to be Mint State. All of those coins are always available for a price. I know that because I built two sets for customers when I was a dealer. The only roadblock will be if you have to have all population #1 coins. THAT is very hard.

I am on the same quest: All PCGS too for me, but I only want one from every year. The 1893 S is out of my budget as a YN.

THAT collection is far more doable. I have dabbled with doing it a time or two but lost interest before I was done. If you can live circulated coins, you can go pretty far with it. The rubber meets the road with the coins from 1893 to 1895. All of them, regardless of the mint mark or lack there of are pricey.

I'm not that bad... Hopefully I won't ever be. Agreed, though.

I lack 8 Morgans to make a set. I just start to get ill when I think of the prices of getting them all in at mint condition. I am an AU sort of guy. If I can get a 1894 in AU that looks good I will take it over a MS65 that costs $40,000. There are many Morgans you can get that are graded in MS64 for the $100 mark. The 1884, 85 and 86 P type. I count 22 Morgans you can get in MS64 for less than $100. There are probably ten including the Carson City type that will cost you plenty in any sort of mint condition. I think if I thought about it I would not have collected Morgans, and would have tried to get better quality 20th century coins like Walkers, LSQ's, Buffalos and Mercury dimes.
Every set can be improved. I might have collected those $2.50 Indian Head gold coins.

The only thing tough about Morgan's is having the money to buy what you want.

Doing a complete Morgan set in MS and heck, even AU on the tough dates is a tall order. You're doing the right thing by purchasing over the threshold (MS64) examples of the common date/mint marks. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes, the Morgans can be had if you want to spend the money for them. Is it a wise investment? Maybe it is just a great hobby to collect these works of silver art. I showed my so/so set to a friend of mine and he was so impressed because I had a lot of common MS64 Morgans. He was not a collector of course. A MS65 Morgan with that frosty look is a beautiful thing even if it is a common coin that sat in a vault for 120 years.
