Sometime last year, my dad inherited part of a coin collection. I've already posted about some of the oddities found in it. However, while searching through it, we found 2 1916 plain Mercury dimes, both fsb and toned. Without pictures (yet) what would you guess a value to be?

Full Split Bands normally means Mint State but they would have to be at least AU if they're actually FSB. A 1916 Merc w/FSB could be valued as low as $25 for an AU example with problems and as high as $10,000 if it were a Mint State Superb Gem with great eye appeal. So my guess is more than $25 but less than $10,000. There's no way to be more specific. Sorry about that.

FSB means little as to the final grade of a coin. The obverse could be a mess and the reverse great. Usually not but it does happen.

It is impossible to tell you anything from the imformation provided. Here are some factors.

1. The grade on the slab.
2. The certification company that provided the slab. PCGS and NGC are the leading companies. All of the rest have less clout. Some are nothing but fly by night outfits that were formed to fool the public.
3. Look of the coin. Is it white, is it toned or is it something in the middle.
4. Is it properly graded in the slab. Experts can disagree over this.
5. Does it have "eye appeal?" This is a matter of taste, but there a level of agreement on this issue although it's not univeral.

Putting a value on a coin is a complex business, especially for older coins like this. Even with photos nothings is for certain.

It's not slabbed, but here's one of the coins

I promise you, the bands look better in hand than in picture.

Not FSB but a very nice coin! I'd say MS-64.

Assuming the pictured coin grades out problem-free as a MS63FSB then it's a $50 coin. It does look like a nice piece.
