Neither the single letter "C" mint mark nor the "J" assayer mark correspond to any documented legitimate issue from 1840. So I'd say it has to be a counterfeit of some sort.

I'd further remark that to me the cap seems extraodinarily tall even when taking its doubling into account. That doubling obviously corresponds with the interruption and offset continuation of the "10" and nearby dentils. Quite odd overall.

How about a weight and a peek at the edge?

Thanks for your help. I'll try to scan the edge.

btw, here is a close-up showing some of the more obvious double-striking -

A known CC, imitating Guanajuato... but no small "o" inside the G and simply a "J" assayer rather than "P.J.".

I believe I recognize the coin - It reads 1840 G J single mint mark and assayer initial. It is related to the Riddell # 412 which uses the 1840 G with PJ assayer initials.

These are typically seen in a German Silver type alloy that required multiple strikes to bring up a clear image. Looks like this one is a wide multi-struck copy.

Here is an example from my files. It is a very common counterfeit that is often encountered in very high grades. The scarcest types are Sheffield plate and copper versions. There are also far more examples of multi-struck copies than clear single strikes.

There is a drilled example of the 1840 G J, which I call a Riddell # 412v (variety) on ebay right now for about $25:

That is over priced, IMO for such a damaged example. It is however a decent example of a period cancel which proves the coin was a circulating variety. In many cases, I intentionally buy one high grade and one low grade that can prove circulation.

There is also a very worn example of the Riddell #412 with the PJ assayer. The price is about $100 which is very high IMO based on actual scarcity. The 412 is relatively common but less common than the 412v.
