Hi all!

I have a 20 piastres dated 1334//9 from Hejaz, that was struck using extremely rusty dies (just as Krause says about this issue).
After my research, I couldn't find any other example like mine. The closest I found was the one from Stephen Album Auction 17 - lot 1649. Some marks caused by rusty dies are exactly the same on both coins. So I assume the same rusty die was used to struck both coins, however the parts marked with "?" on my coin makes me wonder what happened there? The die was recut for some reason? I haven't seen it on any other Hejaz coin.. Any thoughts?

Also, I found some info online suggesting that these coins were most probably struck at Heaton Mint in Birmingham (and not in Mecca as the legend reads). But the quality of this coin cannot even compare to other coins produced by Heaton mint..

If anyone has any ideas or could suggest some useful literature about Hejaz coinage, would be highly appreciated!

Where were the coins minted ?

I've noticed similar marks on Egypt coins of 1917 and Palestine coins of 1927 but I had assumed they were dirt.

? = HMMM ... looks like some form of slide doubling or skidding misalignment error in a counterclockwise fashion with the movement of the anvil die due to the impact and force of the hammer die or vice versa. Vice versa? Yes that is why I do not collect India coins. LOL. What is the obverse?

and wanted to post something similar, though you seem to have a better grasp of terminology.

wow, thanks for the info! I just read about slide doubling / skidding misalignment and it looks like it indeed!

The inscription on the coin itself says "Struck in Mecca", however I read that they were most probably minted in Birmingham at Heaton Mint. The trial strikes for these coins were made there.
So I don't know for sure if they were minted in Mecca or Birmingham...
