I have about 25 Morgans and about 30 Kennedy halves that are loose (not in individual holders). I am thinking about putting them in holders. First off, is that necessary since none are MS qualityI have many that are prob XF)? If so, is there a preferred holder (price/quality, fit, material) or will any old holder do?

Another question: I have a roll of Bi-Centennial halves that are is outstanding condition. They are in a plastic tube, so it's not original. I peaked at them the other day and just slid a couple out to look and it looks like some could be BU or higher. So do I leave them in the tube or remove them to a individual holder? Would it be worth having some of the better looking ones graded?

Ah....rookie questions.....

I would put the Morgans in something, Spar, just to keep them from rubbing together. I use all kinds of things. Mostly plastic 2x2's for coins that are not in albums or folders, although for my better/rarer/costlier coins I use Air-Tites with the foam insert because they don't roll around in there like they do sometimes with the 2x2's or with direct-fit Air-Tites.

The cheapest would be the cardboard 2x2's with the mylar inside that you staple togther. I use these on most of my foreign coins (fun to own but basically worthless coins), but not for my main U.S. collection because I don't think the mylar protects the surface of the coin well enough.

But if you go with the cardboard holders, you'll want to buy a flat-clinch stapler, or you'll end up having to take a pair of pliers to mush down the bottom curly parts of the staples; otherwise they interfere when you stack them in a box and sometimes even get tangled up with each other.

A tube for the Kennedys would probably be sufficient. I use tubes for things I save for no good reason that aren't worth much -- silver Roosevelts, Susie B's, pretty Kennedys, etc.

This is a good rookie question -- one that is worth answering for yourself before you spend a lot on something and then later wish you'd chosen a different method, which I have done.

Let us know what you decide.

It would depend on the dates of the Morgans and Kennedy coins, if the Kennedy halves are silver I would just leave them in the tube for silver melt.I would only put a Morgan in a holder if it were a good date and had some real value. I would never send a coin off to a TPG unless the coin in my opinion had a great amount of numismatic value.

Sparhawk,

I've found that 2x2's, vinyl pages with pockets, and a three-ring binder is the way to go. It's relatively inexpensive, easy to set up, and it allows you to organize however you want. You can add more sleeves to the binder and buy more binders if necessary. They store easily and you can view both obverse and reverse.

For those special pieces, I put them in airtights. These will also fit in the sleeves if you want to keep sets together.

.......
I put my "real" special Morgans into an album (where they'll fit)...dupes go to 2x2's in a three ring binder as SeatedNut says)...Halves in coin tubes.....dupe Buff's in coin tubes....dupe dimes in coin tubes.......wheat pennies in album and segregated ziplock bags
Other special coins and small groups of them go nice in 2x2's as well....
And I'd like to see some pics of those Bicentennials !...If they're in good enough shape to keep......then they're worth "protecting" from abrasion.....

I suggest albums if you are building a complete set (as defined by the album; Dansco, Whitman, etc.).

I suggest using "the 2x2 in three-ring binder" for a more customizable or miscellaneous set.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do not have a good digital w/macro but I'll try this weekend to pick out a few to put up here. I'll be looking online for holders as well. I have several in the round plastic w/foam inserts for SBAs and Sacs. I like those, but they don't stack nicely in my safe. The 2 x 2 ideas sounds good. I have 14 or so dimes that need homes too, so I have my work cut out for me...
