Hello Everyone. My sons and I have just begun to collect coins via coin roll hunting and metal detecting. We came across this Wheat penny and we were hoping someone could give some opinions on it. Do you think is it some sort of error or has it just gone through some hard times? The 3rd number in the date is missing, the rim on the rear is very thick and blocking the top of the letters, and the beginning part of "Liberty" is missing as well. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

to CCF. Looks like a well worn cent not an error. Have you checked out our metal detecting section yet? John1

I believe this poor coin has indeed seen some hard times. The circular scratches on the obverse look like they came from a coin rolling machine -- where it may have been stuck. The rims look like it has spent some time in a dryer. It's a shame that the date is missing. Even if a coin's in bad shape I like to know how old it it. Keep hunting. There's still stuff out there to find!

Looks like a dig coin, lots of ED, corrosion, pitting. I would guess by the spacing between 9's its a 30's-50's, 9's may be 30's style...too damaged to tell. Same w/ mintmark, D or S? to the family! BTW, dug up coins aren't really worth much unless very rare. You might read up in other threads about cleaning digs, like soaking in mineral oil for months to loosen the crud.

Most silver coins come out of the ground (unless in salty ground near a beach) in almost exactly the same condition as when they were lost.
Gold, if you are ever lucky enough to find one, doesn't mind being in the dirt, and the very worst that will happen is possible copper spots, which might have developed even if they were not buried.
Copper/bronze/brass/iron will all corrode.

It may have been an outdoor find and someone polished/sanded the coin removing the roughness off the tops of the devices. That is what I feel we are seeing on this coin.

Not sure to why the digit is missing but it looks like 1919.
