Hello friends,

I recently quit one hobby (breeding discus fish) to get back into another, coin collecting. I am a very light-weight collector about 20 years ago then I started watching shows like Rick Tomaska etc.. I must say, he does sell a lot of very nice coins/sets. So my question is, are the statistics he shows from the grading service real numbers? I ask because when he shows the comp's from places like ebay, I notice the dates on the ad's and many are from years ago.

An example was, I watched him sell some beautiful 1950 nickels, he calls 5-step, and shows the ebay comp from 2009. So I am not sure if he is trying to sell me or the coins?

I would like to get some coins that are not flooding the market per say that grade very high with low volume if you will. MS65 or better, but not sure what is Hot?

Thank you all for your input.

Rick is one that I trust. Coin vault would be second. The comparisons that are used are to give you an idea, buyer beware as always. Research what you want to buy before hand so you know the going prices.

Thank you John. I trust forum people's advice as true collectors always tell it like it is.

Question? When you say do the research, are you referring to coin pricing guides, ebay, or shows like Rick?

I have no problem looking up prices, just where would I find the most accurate prices? Or is it, what is hot today vs what was hot yesterday?

You should be looking for things that are not hot or are out of favor.

MS-66-67 Silver Commems are way out of favor. Price compression has made 66's in many series just a few bucks more than 65's.In the 90's they were hot, they have now been out of favor for at least 15 yrs.

First rule, don't buy from the TV shows.

Second rule for a COLLECTOR, forget about what is "hot", buy what you like.

Third rule for speculators, If it is "hot" you've probably already missed the opportunity. You need to buy what is going to become "hot".

Fourth rule, nobody truly knows what is going to become "hot". But some market manipulation does go on.
Rest in Peace

This. But do your research so you know what you're buying and what you can expect to pay. A coin is worth is what someone is willing to spend, not what someone is asking for.

I have always wondered about Rick Tomaska's comps. In my opinion they aren't really comps. Most of what he shows as comps are listings, not sale prices. Sold prices should be used for comps. Just because he pulls some guys listing on ebay asking the moon for a coin doesn't mean that is a comp.

I always suspect that TV advertisers at one time sold used cars. Keep away from them.

just carl is right on. Stay far far away from TV advertising pitches. What is hot will not be hot, when? Soon.
