I have decided to start collecting $5 modern gold coins. However, I'm just a little curious for what is a reasonable price to pay for them. The reason I am asking is because these coins are more so just bullion coins. Which means the value is most likely just based off of gold value.

Current bullion value is $120.70 for $5 1/10 ounce gold coins.

My goal is to own the complete set in BU only. I don't want any proofs or other mint marks beside Philadelphia.

Below is my First coin of 2017 that I have bought.
(It's not a 1/10 ounce though)

Are you limiting yourself to the $5 bullion eagles or are you thinking of the $5 commemorate coins? Also the melt price you quoted is for 1/10 oz the $5 melt valve is around $300. You will pay a considerable premium on the 1/10 oz coins if they are your set goal.

I only want to do the $5 Bullion Eagles. Because trying to own a big set will cost a lot of money. Just to get the 32 1/10 ounce gold bullion eagles is around five thousand and something I estimate.

I don't want to bother with any TPG ones. Because to me, I don't see a point in having them in anything else besides my 2x2's.
By the way, I just bought a 2013 1/10 ounce off ebay for $141.

I hope you keep us posted with your progress.

I am doing the opposite of you... collecting the proof 1/10th AGEs. Sadly, I have quite a few holes to fill. And yes, I know the premiums over spot are lousy on these guys, but I started back in the 90s and can't stop now.

ebay doesn't give ebay bucks on bullion coins anymore! They cut that out about 6 months or so ago. I took a big hit on my ebay bucks!

Often they are still listed only as modern commemorative coins. That is correct though if they are listed as bullion.

The 1986 Statue of Liberty gold $5 coin is nice by Elizabeth Jones. It is .24 oz of gold and costs about $350. There are many nice gold coins. Gold makes up the most of their value and not numismatic merit. That commemorative is worth the money IMO.

I have tried to get some older dates but I consistently have been outbid at the last second. People are paying a premium of $30 to $60 dollars for them.

@CelticKnot, The proofs are nice too. I think I'll buy just one of those. I do plan on updating you guys once my next coin comes in the mail.

The smaller the size the higher the premium applies well to $5 AGEs. They are bullion coins and also often bring 15% to 25% premiums to melt (currently $20 to $30 over melt).

Older dates can command greater premiums but the $60 premium you cite is excessive IMO. ebay is a retail venue (sometimes high-end retail) so consider pawn shops, coin forums, coin clubs, etc. I'd stick with raw pieces to avoid higher prices for "graded bullion". Good luck.

You can certainly avoid bigger premiums by buying ungraded/raw, but be careful of counterfeits, even in smaller denominations, and especially from pawn shops, Craigslist, and other dealers you don't trust.

I need to check more pawn shops but the ones I have checked did not impress me. A pawn shop would be the last place I would sell a coin or any precious metal or stone. I only knew one honest pawn broker in my life. Ok to buy stuff at the pawn shop but you get what you pay for IMO.
