pre-1982 cents contained 95% copper as todays contain just 5%. The older, copper-er pennies tend to have a more "classic" look to them then the newer ones. After dealing with them for a while, you develop the ability to spot most of the older ones from newer ones just by color.

I find that the zinc pennies look thinner too, and the relief is much lower. 99% of the time I also can tell if I penny is copper or zinc without looking at the date.

The pre-1982 cents were 95% copper. The post-1982 cents are plated with 95% copper. So, in theory, the surfaces should look almost the same.

Copper reacts with all sorts of stuff, and can turn a number of colors, depending on what it is exposed to and for how long.

In my opinion, both cents in your picture were virtually the same color when they were new, but are now a product of their environment over the past 36 and 19 years, respectively.
