Well, I'm usually just a Halves person when it comes through searching rolls, but, my bank forgot to order my 3 boxes this week and I've got severe anxiety at the prospect of having to wait another 7 days for them Sooooo... I thought to pre-occupy my time in between, I would buy a different denomination box of coins. What do you suggest I'de have the best luck with? I prefer larger coins, but would gladly take your suggestions. Quarters were my thought (box of), I don't have a lot of patience for searching through smaller coins, but, again, your opinions and suggestions are very much welcomed. Hmmmm...what box(s)should I buy from my bank? Thanks, my coining friends Laura

Quarter are used heavly and it is rare to find a silver quarter. Pennies, that what I suggest you can find 1 wheatie in every 5 rolls. they have alot of errors and varations to offer. But since you dont like small coins go for nickels. many old nickels are still in circulation, you can try your chances in find silver War Nickels.

My experience has been that by searching nickels you are most likely to find something that's over 50 or even 60 years old. I've even found a few Jefferson's from the late 30's in pretty nice condition over the years. They're not as easy to spot as wheat pennies, or the silver coins, so I think they're most likely to be overlooked by casual collectors.

I have had the most luck finding old nickels in circulation. I have found quite a few from the 50s and some from the 40s. Going through rolls of them should yield even better results.

Ironically, I just cashed in 3/4rs of a box of unsearched nickels that I sat on for a couple of months, but now, I'm wondering, if I buy another box of them, what should I look for (except the obvious War Nickels). Full steps? What other denominations? Do you really think that quarters are out of the question as far as finding silver? I'm not sure if quarters have the same chances of finding errors....like the extra leaf(s) in the Wisconsin "extra leaf varieties". Should I only keep "full steps" before a certain year in Jefferson nickels? I can find lots of those "full step" nickels in the plus 1990 years if I'm roll searching....but, is it worth it? Thanks, Laura

Quarters are my favorite, but then, I'm not looking for silver and rarely find silver quarters. Quarters are heavily used with a high turnover so finding the older coins in high grade is tough. There are also lots of quarter varieties and several are available only in circulation so you have as good a chance of getting the best grade as anyone.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I would also agree with going for Nickels. Like stated before, there is a better chance of finding "older" years. I have also found a few off center strikes (slightly off center) and quite a few War Nickels. Whatever you choose, good luck.

I'd say nickels, but since I'm doing the nickel roll survey, I'm kind of biased! I find about two silvers in every three boxes of nickels, so although not as profitable as halves, at least nickels can help you somewhat with your "silver fix".

Well Laura, as I stated in another thread.....I tried the Nickel fever once......I got $200.00 worth of nickels.........I found NOTHING of any interest. Not ONE War Nickel !.......some in the '30's and '50's and 60's......but nothing I don't already get in my pocket change......AND IT'S A LOT MORE TIME CONSUMING THAN HALVES! IMHO .... If you're just trying to plug holes.....then you need to do every denomination!.......but if you're looking for some "nuggets"....I'm not doing the nickels again for a long long time....if ever. Halves are SO much easier because of the bigger coin........ I may try pennies soon.......but I'm a "Half Guy" ...(that didn't sound right!)..LoL... .

That's kinda how I felt about nickels too, Eaglefoot. I've searched them before and although I found a few Buffalos, I just don't think I have the patience to search them again. I think that I've decided to give Quarters a try (1 box) and see if I can find any State Quarter Errors. This hopefully will get me through till I can get more boxes of halves next week. Laura

I personally enjoy going thru cents. I pull out the copper, find on avg 10/12 wheats per box and have the chance to pull out old, high quality coins or any of the varieties that exist. It seems that every roll produces something.

Half dollars, no doubt. My first box didnt yield anything too interesting but the next box...now that is a different story. TONS of silver. Although, if halves are not available, try getting nickels or even pennies. These two will keep you busy for days.

I'm getting too lazy though...OneMoreRoll........I enjoy "less & less" the work and busy part.....and I like to go right to the " find" !.......Plus....now that it's Spring......I don't set aside much time to spend hours searching and searching for little to no "nugget production"!......patience IS a virtue I guess....but it's "outside time" now !..

I usually find 1-2 War Nickels per box of nickels and a 5 or so from the 40's. With cent boxes, I usually find 5 to 10 wheats per box, but there seems to be less and less each time I search
