Another find on eBay--

Do you see it yet?

Date comparison: Top date: certified 1918/7, bottom date of coin I bought--I see something.

On the 1918/7, there is a marker--a die crack from the hair to the jaw (bottom picture is coin I bought)

Tough call. To my eye, the overdate has a noticeably straight-across top to the last digit, which I don't see here.

Yep, also see it at right upper 8 point to east!
Lucky you...

Yeah--I wondered about that too. I spend a lot of time studying pictures before bidding. Lower grade examples often don't look as straight across the top of the date (pics below)

However, the half-moon lower loop of the 8 is a much stronger marker whenever the date is visible. But we'll see when it arrives.

Doubt it, but still a chance, usually when you get one like that, you know.

We'll see...this is the first one I've found unattributed in years of searching where it looked even close to the diagnostics. But--I'm not claiming it's anything until I have a close look.

I used to cherrypick these with some frequency (maybe 15 total) back in the '60s, mostly in the Good-VG range. One, however, was a VF, cherried in 1964 or '65. And I did nail an AG a couple of years ago.

Studying this one more, I'm actually feeling more confident. Comparing the diagnostic cracks on a very late die state, I'm seeing something very similar on my coin--animation below. Well, I'll know soon enough.

Just noticed, if you look close enough, you can see the seven go through the bottom loop of the 8 to the left.

Yeah--that's why I bought this coin. Also, the upper top left of the 8 looks rather level, even if the right corner is more rounded. Then again, if my eyes are playing tricks one me--which happens often staring at fuzzy pictures--it's not a huge loss.

Update--the nickel arrived, and after all that rigorous analysis...it's just a regular 1918-D. The bottom loop is actually oval--huh?
Oh well...at least I know the markers now. So I'm 0/2 on cherrypicking US overdates on ebay. But, I'm pretty certain I've found a 43/2--you might spot it in this picture.
