My 5 year old wants a metal detector. He's obsessed with finding treasure. In my town it is quite possible he could succeed. Is there such thing as an affordable detector that would work with some reliability? You know, like a Fisher-Price My-First-Metal-Detector.

As with all things you get what you pay for.
Second hand units can be found on ebay from $25 up.
Wallmart used to sell them but I don't know if they still do as did Radioshack
Kids have low attention spans I know I'm one so a simple easy to use machine would be a better bet rather than an older second hand machine that would require some setting up.

It depends on what you mean by affordable. There are some nice bounty hunter detectors you can buy new for under $100. I'm sure if you watched ebay you could pick one up for under half of that. I bought a Bounty Hunter discovery 1100 for $99 and it seems to work quite well for the price.
Rest in Peace

You get what you pay for. I'd go with an Ace 150, maybe used on ebay. You're much better off with something that works and can be grown into than some toy that results in frustration because all it find is junk.

There's always the luck of the draw. We used to sell a $40 BH. One of our regulars got it for his 5 year old. He showed him how it worked by finding a pop tab and a bottlecap. So the kid tries it, and his first find was a billon warnickel.
