zacharycash. the problem with your question is that in order to be objective a person would have had to use both detectors. As they are both entry level machines it is unlikely that anyone here would own or use both.

Nohope, ive been reading that website and ive seen a lot of people complain about pinpointing. Do you have that same problem?

Zach, I usually only have trouble pinpointing if the target is false or trash. Coins usually ring true and I can pinpoint them easily (coins the stand on end and are in heavily ferrous soil are the exception).

I don't have any trouble pinpointing except when I am using my 12 inch coil on targets deeper than 9 inches even then its never more than an inch or two off. I was lucky as I had someone who works for Garret show me how to do it right from the get go. Even then I had to train myself to do it properly and not just dig a huge hole :-)

^Nohope - "entry level"? that sounds like me, I am about to buy my first detector soon, so do I count? LOL... I'd be the first to be able to give an 'objective assessment' about the ACE 250 (Garrett) when (or if) I buy one soon....

NumisMattyUK I have had an ACE 250 for a couple of years now and I love it but that just means I cant be objective about it. I have not compared it to any other machines.

The thing is, I'm a beginner and when I'm sweeping around in the backyard my brothers old pioneer 202 will beep all the time, and ill dig and not find anything. I dont know whats happening. Is this just because I dont know what to listen for or am I doing it wrong?

Zacharycash I can't help you with the 202 as I have never used one. However I have found with my Ace that if the cable from the coil to the display is loose you will get lots of false readings so I make sure its wound tightly round the pole. the other thing I noticed was if I swing to fast I get false readings at the end of each swing. About 1 foot per second seems to be the optimal speed for my unit. All this I found out through practice. You have to get to know your machine before you can expect to use it properly. Try planting various object and mark the locations with stones or sticks. Track over these and watch the display as well as listen to the distinctive sound the detector makes for each item. Each detector has a sweet spot for pin pointing mine is about half an inch behind the front of the inner coil In the long run it will save you a lot of time if you can pin-point your target before you dig. Read the manual if you have one if not download it from the net.

The pioneer 202 is not that same as the Garretts,, the false signals sound like a ground balance problem,, can you take a picture of the electronic box on the machine so I can look at the knobs ?
the older machines have to be manually balanced and it can be a little bit frustrating ,but if its not done correctly the machine will not function properly ,false signals and minimal depth etc are the result .

The BH Pioneer 202 does not have a ground balance as it is automatic. Sounds like the detector needs to go back to the factory. If the detector is producing continuous signals it also may also be electrical interference, lose connector or electrical problems that need to be addressed by the factory. If the detector is still under warranty BH will take care of it. It won't hurt to contact them. This is the last phone number I had for them. 1-800-444-5994. It's First Texas and that is the parent company for BH and Fisher. The ACE 250 has been getting rave reviews but if you want to get the BH it's up to you. Metal detectors are more of a preference item. What makes you happy may not be someone else's cup of tea. HH

Never heard of an automatic ground balance ,, even my whites has a step to go through to balance the machine between air and ground before use ? Here is an online users manual ,, maybe that will help . http://www.detecting.com/pdffiles/p202man.pdf
