The golden dollar type coins look hideous after being circulated for a while. They tone real bad and look dark.

Yes... I get several every few days from a parking garage. Almost all of them are brown. However, the nice ones that I have put in books seem to keep their gold color. The ones that are in folders that my kids have do seem to have turned a little but not nearly as much as the ones from the parking garage.
