Offered this and thinking about buying it. Thoughts on grade and problems appreciated. TPG grade and price in 48 hours. Thanks! I think there are stronger strikes available. This one is weak on Liberty and fur on Buff head. There are some dark specks there. I am going to guess that it has a grade of MS63 on the holder. That might be high if it does. This may even be AU55 or AU58. Ask yourself if you really like this one. It appears to have some nice luster. Buy the coin not the holder.

Thanks guys. There are 3 categories that I have no confidence in grading well: Indian Head cents, Buffalo nickels and all gold, especially 19th century. I like this coin, but I agree that it has a weak, off-center strike. I like the surfaces, the luster, and the fields that aren't flat but richly textured. It almost looks sculpted with a chisel, rather than minted in a press. Buffaloes are one of my favorite designs, and Fraser was a genius among artists. Learning tons from your experience.

This is a commonly-available coin in high grades (65-67) with full strikes; you can afford to be choosy, so be choosy, and wait for an example with a strong, full strike, attractive luster and toning (this one has carbon spots), and clean fields.
I would think this is probably in a MS64 or MS65 holder but it looks like a weaker strike - later die state of clashed dies, more noticeable on the obverse - with some carbon spotting.

I'll say 64 and agree with Adam's comments.

The coin has an off-center strike, and LIBERTY is a little weakly struck. I agree with some of your observations. Grade is always an opinion. I do like the coin, but your remarks, and that of others, made me think that I wanted a fully center-struck example. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
