Hi all,

well I threw this in my junk pot to begin with as I thought the bottom of the coin was munched. Only by looking through the pot as I had time to spare did I take a closer look at this coin.

Canada-5-Cents---Multiple-Errors!-Known-Type?

As you can see this thing has a ton of issues! Just from doing a quick search I can see the 1944 nickels had a ton of die crack problems but the reverse has a doubled 'CANADA' and so many die cracks I though it was damage. The obverse has one running from I to I and extra metal around 'VS' and 'IMP'

Is this a known error? I can't see any mention online of a double die for the 1944 5 Cents
Rest in Peace

That was a full steel planchet was it not? If so, steel dies stamping hard steel instead of softer Killed the dies before their time. Same with 43 US "Steelies", the Lincoln Cent. Die cracks, missing weak letters, overpolished dies, chips and die breaks, you name it. As to documented, I'll have to leave that to the Canadian experts. Yeah, that coins an absolute mess!

Looking at it again, that looks to be MD on CANADA, which would make sense with the die cracks forming on the other side.

It is not a double die, it's Mechanical Doubling.
Some of what appear to be die cracks are actually rust forming beneath the surface, the coin is made of chrome plated steel.
Some are actual die cracks.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

The underlying rust damage looks interesting, but ruins it as a collectable in my opinion - too distracting.
