I thought I'd share this beautiful 1889 Indian Head cent that came in the mail yesterday. It looks to be close to full red with some light pinkish/red around the reverse rims. There are a couple of small marks on the Indian's cheek, but other than that it looks pretty clean. While I've been fooled by "altered color" in the past on small cents, this one appears to be original. . . I think . . . and hope. Paul Bulgerin

Appears quite lovely and original, perhaps 64RB.

Don't be surprised if it's rated BR, not RB.

Paul ,I admit it's an original piece but I'm confused about the flatness on the leaves left side of reverse . AU-63 RB .

T-BOP - Obverse looks fine, so I'm thinking a grease issue here.

Makes sense, but surely this is RB.

Clear RB as there's a lot more than 5% red, and 63 seems right for this. It's a lovely coin and I like it.

Thanks for the responses. I just wanted to show this to my fellow collectors. I picked it up for only $41 on ebay (very surprised it didn't go higher) and it now has a spot in my collection.

Awesome! Very pretty, and I would put it at a RB as well.

I am suspicious about this coin. Since you just received it, you may want to examine it very carefully and make your own determination. But from what I can tell, the "E" in "ONE" looks broken. If this is indeed the case, I don't know of any 1889 dies with a broken "E" like that. Does anyone else? The boldness of ONE CENT compared to the rest of the reverse also concerns me.

Interestingly, the strike of the Indian's head looks a bit mushy while the "one cent" on the reverse is very sharp.

On a second look, it may be the lighting giving the appearance of a broken "E". One other thing I noticed is the "1" in the date looks doubled to the south. If you can match this to a Snow variety, that would help prove authenticity. Even if there's only a small chance it is counterfeit, I think it's still better to bring up discussion!

Mike1487,
Thanks for your comments. No, the E is not broken. That's just the lighting. The same is true for the date; no doubling, just reflection from my light source.
"In hand" the left side of the wreath looks pretty much the same as the right.
I still have issues sometimes trying to photograph brilliant copper coins.

Really nice looking coin and for that price. Odd for something from ebay.
