To much magnification. 5x-150x is good. There will be a learning curve involved with a usb scope, mainly the lights.I had to cover all but one LED and filter that one.

I have had very good luck with my 5 megapixel setup. All I did was add a higher upright so that by backing up can now take full coin pix of dollar size coins. lighting is indeed tricky, just have to find what works for you. I use handheld LED flashlights or small LED clip light.

NOTE: screen on laptop

Your ability to get enough-but-not-too-much light on the coin and steady hands in adjusting the focus will be the keys.

I've never seen too much light. More light = faster shutter speed. I suppose if you have so much light that the shutter can't go any faster that it could be a problem, but in macro this would require lights beyond our technology. What do you mean by "too much light" ?

edited to add: after thinking about this a bit more, I have experienced too much light when using halogens, but the problem was that the coin actually got hot from the lights being too close.

crazy I saw a earlier post where you put the bigger bar on your setup. really thats what got me looking at these style scopes. my problem is I have a older scope that works on the older , say vista laptops. I have a new windows 10 now and need to find what will work on it.
plus I have not been able to find one of the 5meg scopes like yours.

needs to work with windows 10

The only other thing needed is the 14" 5/8" brass rod found in ACE Hardware store (bar used in lamps).

Is that 600 lumens each? Even if not, I think that's overkill.

Diffused light is what you're after, not a spotlight.

I think you could more than get by with a few 25 lumen lights. It doesn't take much to provide the correct light.
