Very early this morning (5:00 AM, MST) I was up and out in the snow feeding the animals while it was dark. Suddenly, I distinctly heard the call (gobble, gobble, gobble) of a Wild Turkey, "WTH..." I thought. They never come around here with our dogs and all, but then again here did that flippin' 'gobble' come from?

Little while ago while reading a post and sipping coffee I heard it again just outside the front door!! and grabbed the camera. I wasn't disappointed, apparently we've now got a flock of turkeys. :) :) :) I can now see why Ben Franklin wanted the Wild Turkey as our national bird and subsequently on our coin and currency. What are your thoughts on having the Wild Turkey instead of the Bald Eagle? Maybe have a commemorative issue ASE with Ben Franklin and a Wild Turkey on the reverse... Please chime in, and I'm not pulling your leg, I just took these pictures, LOL...

Take Care
Ben

First off......GREAT SHOTS !......wild turkey tastes wonderful on the BBQ grill too by the way......
Yeah I'd agree... it is a beautiful bird and has been here forever and everybody knows about ole Ben Franklin pushing for that to be our National Symbol.....but now it's dissappeared from all thought of it being recognized enough to belong on a coin of some type......how many pilgrims did it feed ?...how many pioneers ?.... how many farmers ?....or settlers living in Sod houses?........it really is an important bird with some real historical level reletivity to our identity as a Nation........
IT SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED !.......good topic!

Awesome pictures Bonedigger! I'd go for the Commemorative with Franklin and a wild turkey. The reason I bought the Bald Eagle Commemorative set was because I've watched them in the wild nesting with the young ones. It's so peaceful while fishing with noone for miles around. It must be the outdoors thing.

Anyway, Great Pics!

You know my whole demeanor on wildlife has changed drastically over the years. 20 years ago I would have bagged a couple, but now I realize that conservation and moderation is best for the long run.

Oh, I'll still hunt them in season, along with pheasant, grouse, chukkar, etc., but this is the hard time of the year for wildlife and simply figured I'd throw out some grain, pen the dogs, and leave them alone. Like you said, they are Americans too and should be protected...

Take care
Ben

Hey, Digger, I am always up for a little Wild Turkey Actually, I would find it hard to pick one over the other. As a hunter and a conservationist, they both have deep seated meaning to me. Like you, I am finding it harder to pull the trigger, knowing just how much pressure everything is under. There is little doubt what the turkey means to America and recognizing this would be a very good thing.

Oh, yea, thanks for the great pics. Makes me home sick, though. I grew up hunting pheasants along the Missouri river valley around Sioux city. Without a doubt, these are some of my fondest time. There is no experience like stepping into cover and having 100 birds jump.

Why would you want U.S. coinage to advertise liquor?

Those are great shots - reminds me of the wild turkeys I have seen around central NJ. I would like to see a commem with the wild turkey - it's a beautiful bird and yes, they really can fly (one flew over my car as I was driving down a backroad).

I remember the criticism over using them being that they are not a very smart bird (although very wary, which makes them seem smart). But then I was listening to a radio program about the eagle conservation program and one of the criticisms of that bird is that they are known to steal fish from one another (how dishonest!).

It would be nice if our mint would do a commem series (like other mints do) of our nation's national parks and fantastic wildlife.
keepup the good work!

While the wild turkey is a great bird, to many people now think of the turkey as the big dumb white bird we all have for Thanksgiving. I would fear that a coin with a turkey would be highly ridiculed. Think WKRP and the classic Thanksgiving show and the famous line uttered by Mr. Carlson.

Hmmm... a Turkey themed Thanksgiving Commemorative series might be nice (half dollar, dollar, and gold five dollar; not on the normal circulating coins!). 2013 would mark 150 continuous years of the annual Thanksgiving day.
