Hi,
I am a complete newbie to this hobby. Here is one of my first coins....can anyone help me grade it. The person I bought it from said he would rate it MS 60. What do you think? What is the small smooth area on the rim at the 5:00 position? The rim does not show damage on the edge at this point.

I like the look of it, beautiful coin. The reverse die crack is sensational...

Take Care

Nice coin, Dhusker. I'd say that the "smooth spot" at 5 o'clock on the obverse is a " Cud"...created when a piece of the obverse die broke away sometime prior to striking this coin. The reverse die crack, as Bonedigger pointed out, is eye-catching. I personally really like these "blemishes" so to me it enhances the appeal of the coin. Such things do not typically affect the value of the coin (up or down.) If this die crack is a marker for a variety, then perhaps it would increase the value of the coin.

From the pictures, I'd agree that this coin could go anywhere between AU-58 and MS-60 or 61. The stars on the obverse don't seem as stongly struck as they could be. Of more concern is the 'hole' at the base of Liberty's neck at about 4 o'clock. There are also a couple of dings on Liberty's cheek.

I'd be proud to have a coin of this caliber in my collection.

Thanks for sharing. (BTW, nice photos!)

That's quite the coin to show for your first post at Coin Community. Welcome, indeed.

A gentleman by the name of Jules Reiver researched and assigned designations to all the die pairs used to strike this coin. His designation for yours is JR-7a (so designated for the late die state) - the obverse Cud between the 8 and the star is a dead giveaway.

I would not be surprised if this were a Mint State coin. I'm a little worried about the dings on the cheek - are they of a type which could occur outside circulation? That would be the question a grader at NGC or PCGS would likely be asking themself.

Although there are plenty of Uncirculated 1838's in slabs, I was unable to find a record of an attributed JR-7a in Mint State. This coin is likely in the Condition Census (highest-known grades) for the variety.

I also would have to say AU58-MS61 for the reasons stated above. This is a beautiful coin! Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
