I have 1879-S AU-58 that don't look as nice as this coin

The reverse of your coin really does look nice.

I was guessing AU-58 on mine based on my reading of the ANA Grading Standards Guide. I think, because I have so little experience with grading, I'm hesistant to assign MS to anything...

Now the questions is, should I send this off to be slabbed or not? I'm inclined to say yes, just for preservation purposes.

Hi Coinhop,

Have you already been welcomed to the forum?

I would call your coin AU-58 based on the slightly darker color in the fields. This usually is the first sign of friction as a coin is handled. Your photo doesn't show much luster but I'd bet that when you tilt the coin under a light you can see quite a bit of luster in between the stars on the obverse and the letters on the reverse. Those areas are somewhat protected from friction and so retain luster longer than the exposed fields.

This coin is a common date and will likely sell for a small premium over bullion content. It's up to you whether to have it slabbed. If PCGS or NGC grades it you might be able to sell it for enough of a premium to cover the slabbing costs. If they decide it has been cleaned or has any other defect they won't slab it but they will keep your money. It's a nice example of the With Motto Liberty $5 gold type and I don't see any reason why it would be rejected.

However, if it were my coin I would save the grading fee and keep it raw.

Yes, this coin was definitely handled. It has more luster than the photos show (and definitely more on the reverse than the obverse), but it also has quite a network of very faint scratches all over the surface. Unfortunately, I had not yet read the article about scanning coins when I took these photos, and I've already transferred the gold coins to my bank vault. Otherwise, I think I could have produced a more "accurate" picture.

I don't have any intention of selling any of these (if just for sentimental reasons), but would like to preserve them as best I can.
