That looks like a die clash.

The 1950 1951 and 1952 George VI 50c coins with heavy Die Clash Marks in the ear are relatively common.

Thought I would revive this thread instead of opening a new one. I bought a group of silver 50c coins to search for varieties when I found this one. A 1950 Full Design "hearing aid" that also has a die rotation of about 25 degrees. I was going to show the overlay but I see castor has already done that.

Something changed in the 1950, 1951 and 1952 Die Clash Marks characteristics as compared to the previous 1937-1949 Die Clash Marks. The ones in the Kings ear on the Obverse became a lot more pronounced from the previous bean in the ear and the Reverse Die Clash Marks changed from the Kings Bust surrounding the shield to one where the King's ear lobe can be seen in the top left of the shield. I believe that the changes were caused by a recontouring of the King's Bust on the Obverse Dies ....... any thoughts?

pginrh- I know that the positioning of the Kings head on 1937-1947 is slightly different than that on 1948-1952 after the retooling of the head so this would explain the different die clash positioning in those years. But if as you say the 48 & 49 is the same as 37-47, then I have no explanation. Do you have any pictures we can compare to?
