Right around the year 2000, maybe a little before, silver was trading at around $4 US per ounce, and people at a show I was at were joking that they were going to spend their silver Maples pretty soon. That is why you always want bullion coins to be denominated at very low dollar values. They were not intended to circulate, they are intended to trade on intrinsic bullion value plus a premium.

Yeah, but a U.S. dollar is worth 5 times more than a Canadian one!
Okay - I am exaggerating but when I travel to the States from Canada this year, it sometimes feels that way.

If silver dropped to $2 U.S. an ounce the Canadian coin would be worth more but that is not likely to happen. The other posters are right. For bullion value, redeeming at a coin or jewelry shop, the value should be pretty much the same.

It sort of insures a bottom value of the coin. The same could be said for the 1/4 oz. Olympic $100 coin, it will never be worth less than face. I remember when dealers were glad to part with them for $105. darn I'm old.
