How was the MM applied to Proofs in the 70's? Hand punched like business strikes or was the MM applied to the die on these?

Thanks...Mont

I think both proof and business strike had them hand punched into the dies until the late 1980's. After that they were added to the hub, so all dies had the same MM location. I am a bit fuzzy, so someone will have to confirm.

This was kind of my thinking too. Cleared up another question with that answer as well.

Next question. Could a single MM punch be used for ALL denominations that year? In other words a punch is used on LMC dies one day and then the same punch used on Roosevelt dime dies the next...eventually ending up being used for all denominations.

I think they used the same punch for all denominations. Which is why we have two 'S' MM varieties in 1979 and 1981, when the punch was replaced those years.
Rest in Peace

No. It would be a new master die for each denomination.
Did I say that right.

This would explain why it looks like my 1978 Proof set used the same MM punch on all the coins in the set. The "S" has the same flaw on all the coins.
