Hello, this may sound like a silly question but have to ask. I have seen many 2013 pennies that are red or shinny looking, but this one looked different it's dark brown, the side of the penny is brown also, so could this be considered a copper penny?

I have searched the internet looking to find one that looks dark brown and have to say I haven't been able to find one. So hope someone could tell me if there are 2013 pennies out there that are dark brown like this one. Thank you

They are copper plated zinc. The copper plating is going to tone just like the old 95% copper cents do.

It's unusual for a relatively new penny to brown that quickly, probably exposed to environmental conditions. Put it on a scale, it should weigh 2.5g.
If it's over 3g get back to us right away!

Pennies since mid 1982 have been made of 95% zinc with a 5% mix of copper/tin coating. What you have is one exposed to environmental damage, water I suppose, outside elements. There also plating issues, notice the bubbling around the rim, beginning of zinc "rot", the underneath is corroding rapidly.

Spend this one quick, may not be here next year!

Thanks everyone! Sounds like it is exposed to environmental condition. Used a SWS600 scale and this penny weighs 2.7, tried it again and penny weighed 2.6.

Appreciate your opinions.

Forgot to send these pictures. Don't think I want to hurry and spend this one. It's pretty cool looking. Thanks again
